About Howats Chimney Sweeps
At Howats Chimney Sweeps, Glenn and Mike are members of the Guild of Master Chimney sweeps, operating a flue cleaning and chimney sweeping company in Ruardean, Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire, Wye Valley and surrounding areas. Making sure to spend time with our customers, we thoroughly explain the nature of our work while offering practised advice about the use of chimney stoves and appliances. We’re happy to provide demonstrations to clients who are unsure because they’ve never used a fireplace before or who have moved to a new property with an unfamiliar fireplace. Give us a call or an email, our advice is FREE.
We are a small growing business which has been operating for over 11 years. We strive and work tirelessly to stay at the top of our trade. We use the latest equipment to ensure our customers and their chimneys are given the best service. No mess or fuss!
Glenn Howat, started this company in 2014 after a full career in the Armed Forces. Glenn chose the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps to complete all his training to ensure his customers get the best customer experience.

Before your sweep arrives
Customer – If possible, vent (open a window) the room where the sweep will be working.
Customer – Empty your appliance (ash and unburnt fuel) and remove any items from around your appliance and hearth.
Customer – Please remove any items (furniture) that are in front of your appliance. Your sweep needs 1.5m x 1.5m (in front of your appliance) to work.
Customer – Please ensure a plug socket is not obstructed to allow free and easy access or an extension lead is plugged in, visable and switched on.
Sweep arrives at your property
Customer – Secure any pets, not in same room that the sweep will be working.
Customer – Direct the sweep to the room where the appliance is and then let the sweep carry out his duties.
Sweep – Once the sweep has completed his work, he will clean the working area.

Wood Burning Stoves
Have you just had a wood burning stove installed or moved somewhere with one and want to get the best out of it? These simple tips should help you, but you can also go to https://burnright.co.uk/ for more detailed instructions, tips and advice:
Choose the right fuel – always use properly seasoned wood. Green wood is incredibly polluting and considered more harmful to the environment than fossil fuels
Understand and learn the controls for your individual appliance
Never burn/’slumber’ overnight
A wood burning stove will require sweeping quarterly when in use.
